What Is A TOWA Bobbin Case Gauge?

A TOWA Gauge is a tool used to set both bobbin thread and top thread tensions. The digital feature allows you to achieve your machine’s ultimate tension setting easily and accurately. Comes with the L Style bobbin case insert.

The TOWA bobbin tension gauge puts a numerical value to the amount of tension placed on a bobbin. This is very helpful as it allows you to measure the amount of tension placed on a bobbin thread, so you have a benchmark to base bobbin tension.

How To Use The Digital Tension Gauge For Bottom Thread:

  1. Turn the gauge on by holding down the on/off switch until you see it light up. Be sure to set your gauge to the gf (gram force) setting by using the toggle button in the upper right corner of your gauge.

  2. With the Bobbin thread inserted in the metal bobbin case remove the thread from the pigtail and snap it into place in the digital tension gauge.

  3. Pull out the thread and wrap it underneath the bottom pulley, then over the top of the top pulley and then underneath the middle pulley, continue to wrap it over the metal thread guide and underneath the thread holding pinHow To Use The Digital Tension Gauge For Bottom Thread:

  4. Using consistent speed pull the bobbin thread to see what the tension is reading. The number you are trying for a bobbin thread is between 22 and 24 grams force units.

  5. If tension is in between 16 to 18 gf, that means the tension set on the bobbin case is too loose. Using a screwdriver give a slight turn to the larger screw on the metal bobbin case to the right to tighten it up.

  6. If the tension is too high, turn that largest screw on the bobbin case to the left to loosen it up. How To Use The Digital Tension Gauge For Bottom Thread:

  7. After achieving the correct tension, its recommended that you sew out a simple satin stitch column. But for this test, make sure you check your top thread tension first.

How To Use The Digital Tension Gauge For Top Thread:

  1. Turn the gauge on by holding down the on/off switch until you see it light up. Be sure to set your gauge to the gf (gram force) setting by using the toggle button in the upper right corner of your gauge. It is best to set the tension for your bobbin thread first. How To Use The Digital Tension Gauge For Top Thread:

  2. With your top thread threaded through the needle and the presser foot, wrap the thread around the top two white pulleys only, then wrap it above the metal thread guide and under the holding pin.

  3. With consistent speed pull the top thread to see the tension reading. Here we are going to set it at a 150 grams.

  4. If reading shows around 190 grams. This means our top tension knobs are too tight. So we need to loosen them by turning them left or anticlockwise.

  5. If reading is around 65 means top tension is too loose, we need to tighten the tension knob by turning right or clockwise.

  6. After achieving the right tension, its recommended that you sew out a simple satin stitch column.

Guideline Setting Numbers For Top Thread Tensions:

  • Candle Rayon #40: 170gf

  • Candle Polyester #40: 190gf

The numbers above are intended to be used as a guideline and may need to be adjusted up or down depending upon your specific machine. Be sure to set your gauge to the gf (gram force) setting by using the toggle button in the upper right corner of your gauge.
